Analysis

Determination of the isocyanate emission during thermal decomposition processes can be used to indicate whether there is a risk for exposure to isocyanates, when heating the material in question. The analysis is especially useful when the possible contents of isocyanates are unknown.

Routine Analysis

The sample will be heated and the fumes will be sampled with the impinger-filter method, using Dibutylamine as a derivatizing agent.

The routine analysis package measures the contents of the following five different diisocyanates and as many monoisocyanates: 1.6-Hexamethylene Diisocyanate (HDI), 2.4-Toluene Diisocyanate (2.4-TDI), 2.6-Toluene Diisocyanate (2.6-TDI), 4.4'-Methylenediphenyl Diisocyanate (MDI) and Isophorone Diisocyanate (IPDI), and Methyl Isocyanate (MIC), Ethyl Isocyanate (EIC), Propyl Isocyanate (PIC), Phenyl Isocyanate (PHI) and Isocyanic Acid (ICA).

A determination of NDI (Naphthalene Diisocyanate) is optional, and is performed only after agreement with the laboratory.

Two Analytical Procedures To Choose From

Alternative 1. The standard procedure: Approximately 50 milligrams of the sample will be heated to a temperature of 500 °C for a period of 10 minutes.

Alternative 2. Tailored options on demand: Approximately 50 milligrams of the sample will be heated to a specific temperature of your choice, for an optional period of time.

ISO Compliance

The analysis is performed in accordance with ISO 17734-1: Determination of organonitrogen compounds in air using liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry - Part 1: Isocyanates using dibutylamine derivatives.

Quantification

The standard procedure is a qualitative determination of the isocyanate emission during a thermal decomposition process of the material in question. Quantitative determinations may be performed after prior agreement with the IFKAN laboratory. Please see below for the current reporting limits (RL).

Reporting Limits

1.6-Hexamethylene Diisocyanate (HDI), 2.4-Toluene Diisocyanate (2.4-TDI), 2.6-Toluene Diisocyanate (2.6-TDI), 4.4'-Methylenediphenyl Diisocyanate (MDI) and Isophorone Diisocyanate (IPDI): RL = 0.005 µg.

Methyl Isocyanate (MIC), Ethyl Isocyanate (EIC), Propyl Isocyanate (PIC) and Phenyl Isocyanate (PHI): RL = 0.010 µg.

Isocyanic Acid (ICA): RL = 0.050 µg.

Exposure Assessment

The laboratory conditions when processing the samples, regarding for example temperature and duration, may not be directly comparable to those in the actual working environment. This is especially true when the material, during its life-cycle, is subject to other circumstances than those intended.

Therefore, the analysis result should only be used as a guidance tool for where exposure to isocyanates might occur. A complementary air monitoring during the actual working operation involving the material in question is highly recommended as a standard procedure.
